About this event Theoretical Considerations: Applying Psychoanalytic Concepts to working with Couples As part of its programme of Continuing Professional Development, APPI presents a two-part seminar on working psychoanalytically with couples, with Marie Walshe, Registered Practitioner member of APPI. In this first seminar Marie will examine relationships and provide a platform for thinking about how psychoanalysis informs the work with couples. The impact of the pandemic will be explored: as the nuclear social unit, how has the couple survived the enforced isolation of the longest lockdown in Europe? Has the Imaginary rapport of the love relation operated as a defence against the Real threat of Covid? Psychoanalysis offers a unique perspective in the treatment of a couple, where the subject to be held in mind by the analyst is a dyad. Because the sexual couple in a stable relationship continues to prevail as the ideal relationship for most subjects, it has always been a preoccupation of our individual work. The couple clinic requires a treatment in which the transference is not to the individual subjects but to the couple whose suffering and failure they have brought to the couch. As in the clinic of the individual, the fundamental concepts of drive, transference, repetition and the unconscious inform our diagnosis and treatment of the couple's conflicts and accommodations, its symptoms and sublimations. As in the clinic of the child and adolescent, the multiplicity of transferences demands discretion in the direction of the treatment, and the theme of separation requires the conscious safeguarding of subjects who may be facing hysterical, even psychotic, collapse. Who is this seminar series for? Practitioners wishing to extend their practice to working with couples will gain an appreciation of the difficulties to be faced in modulating their work to facilitate a dyad as the analysand. Practitioners already working with couples will have an opportunity in this series to reflect upon the theoretical and technical concepts relating to this particular clinic at part of their continuing professional development. The seminars further offer an opportunity to practitioners working with individuals and young people to broaden their understanding of the working of this system as a symptomatic construct. Marie Walshe is a psychoanalytic psychotherapist working with young people, adults and couples in Dublin. A Registered Practitioner of the Association for Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis in Ireland [www.appi.ie], she has been a training analyst, lecturer, supervisor and tutor on post-graduate programmes in psychoanalysis and psychotherapy. In addition to presenting at psychoanalytically-informed seminars in Ireland and the UK, Marie’s work has been published in Irish peer journals and she contributed a chapter to a recent textbook on Irish psychoanalysis with young people. Marie’s interest in relationships is an acknowledgement of the fundamental fact that we are each constituted in a relationship and so, how we are desired, determines who we become.
